PREVALENCE OF MALARIA PARASITES IN SEDENTARY AND MIGRATORY BLACKCAP POPULATIONS IN SYMPATRIC WINTERING GROUNDS
In some bird species, sedentary and migratory populations share the same wintering grounds, which may facilitate parasite exchange among populations with different geographical origin. Therefore, parasite exchange during sympatric wintering periods might determine the patterns of variation in prevalence of different parasite types, not only during winter, but also during other times of year and in different geographical areas. We studied the community of avian malaria parasites (genera Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) affecting blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla in the Campo de Gibraltar region (SW Spain). In this area, overwintering migratory blackcaps occur both in Mediterranean scrublands and in well developed forests, while sedentary blackcaps hardly ever occur in habitats other than forests. In this situation, different parasite lineages could show variable prevalence between population types, between habitat types, or during the winter period. We report preliminary results of an analysis of the latter effects based on ca. 600 blood samples analysed by PCR, aiming to identify different patterns of parasite transmission during winter that may help us to understand the factors underlying parasite exchange among blackcap populations.
